Why are all the young people in the book hooking up in public places? Does this contradict the PURE order or perhaps encouraging promiscuity and freedoms in some areas makes it easier to exert control in others..
Irene Remme: It makes people feel PURE is a wonderful place on the surface and gives one a sense of freedom. On the other hand, there’s a dark force or cult looming in the background. People today are questioning the freedom of speech, religion, health products to name a few, they once had.
PURE (the government) quietly controlled the information that was broadcast to the world. Everything was fine. The people thought they were free but underneath they were quietly being controlled through messaging from PURE. This is similar to what is happening in the world today.
Susan Levoy: Young people and sex have gone hand in hand since the beginning of time. There is an urgency that young people are more interested in satisfying than worrying about what others might think. Knowing that they are being watched might push them to test the boundaries. I do not see it as encouraging promiscuity I would tend to believe it has to do with control.
First of all, I think Rebecca and Ola should cowrite a novel about future sex practices. In terms of steamy between W&K, we'll see where they end up in the sequel but physically she is more drawn to A.. Still, to be honest, writing sex scenes is a bit uncomfortable for me and not really what I was focused on although the connection between the characters is important. I don't think I will ever write a 50 Shades type of story. :)
OK so here goes. Living so far out in time could invite more evolution in numerous categories, particularly sexual relations. Imagine babies borne with a chip that regulates far out guided sex during teen years then a controlled mating child bearing period, then middle age open relations and so on. Mates would be controlled through licensing by the CRKA, there would be placement, love chips Etc. Most books I read are boring in their sexual content and when there is some it is cursory like V-S. Sex sells particularly in brief sales synopsis on Amazon etc. I think the relation between Willow and Kalesh could have been ‘steamy’.
A society that wants to control their people can take one of two opposing views to sex and reproduction. One is to prohibit birth control in order to increase the population, the other is to sanction sex for pleasure vs. reproduction. There are pros and cons to both.
Prohibiting birth control means that the instinctive sex drive results in offspring. Most societies took this approach in known history. Death in childhood, and death by disease or war was more common in the last few thousand years than living in Canada in… is it the 2500th century in Vision Speak, remind me?!?
Increasing the population created more soldiers and farmers - a simple equation that equaled a better chance of survival.
The other approach, beyond our current day acceptance, is hinted at in Vision Speak. Sex is apparently considered a normal and acceptable behavior, even in a public garden. I assume that this advanced society does not have to worry about unplanned pregnancy or STIs?
Sex is a source of endorphins and a natural human drive. Letting a population pursue this without fear of repercussions may act like a tranquilizer. This could be a ‘Brave New World’ style ‘soma’ for the people, to keep them content?

Unconsciously I'm sure Brave New World, which I quite enjoyed many decades ago in school, probably influenced this..
